why is sustainability important to us?
A New, Sustainable Standard for Accessories
Currently, most fashion accessories are made from poor quality non-biodegradable fabrics and by the means of exploitive production.
Many of the hair accessories on the market are considered fast fashion products, meaning they go out of style very quickly and are sent to the landfill shortly after, where they take years if not decades to decomposed; or if incinerated it will create carbon emissions. Waste Reduction Week Canada reports that an average Canadian sends about 40kg of textiles a year and that less than 1% of these textiles can be recycled.
We decided that would like to change this pattern by creating a new sustainable standard for fashion accessories. We intend to do this by using only sustainable or deadstock fabrics, by increasing the product quality, ensuring fair trade means of production, and having timeless designs that make fashion accessories essential to every outfit.
What is slow fashion?
Slow Fashion
Here at Charlie & Paisley we operate within the slow fashion principles as established by Elizabeth Cline (2013), a sustainability expert (and fellow Vancouverite!):
small batch production
sustainable materials
timeless designs
ethical methods of production

Below as well is our slow fashion symbol glossary, which explains the meaning behind the symbols that are used to classify all of our products.
OUR SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS
Materials
All our products, which include scrunchies, headband, bandanas, oversized scrunchies and bucket hats are handmade in Vancouver from naturally derived, biodegradable fabrics and deadstock fabrics. We carefully select our fabrics, making sure the fabric is either:
biodegradable (i.e. not made from synthetic fabrics) - fabric such as silk noil, organic cotton, hemp and others
naturally derived (i.e. made with minimal use of chemicals and pesticides) - fabrics such as modal and silk velvet
recycled (i.e. existing fabric is broken down and recreated as a new fabric) - fabrics such as recycled polyester, vegan leather and vegan faux-fur
deadstock (i.e. remnant pieces of fabric which were produced decades ago and never put to use) - fabrics such as vintage silk and vintage organza
Apart from our product materials, our product packaging is also sustainable and fully recyclable. We send our products in a organic hand-stamped muslin bag, which should be used to keep our products safe when you’re not wearing them. However, it can be re-used for other purposes.
We ship our packages in polymailers made from 50% post-consumer material, protection bags made from 100% post-consumer material, and our cards are printed on recycled cotton fibre paper, and are in turn 100% recyclable.
Production
All our products, which include scrunchies, headbands, bandanas, oversized scrunchies, bucket hats and bags are handmade in Vancouver, Canada by several local ateliers. Having production in our hometown allows us to be aware of the production cycle specifics from start to finish and ensure that the process is both ethical and sustainable.
Small Batch Designs
We decided that we would like to change this pattern by creating a new sustainable standard for fashion accessories. We intend to do this by using only sustainable or deadstock fabrics, by increasing the product quality, ensuring fair trade means of production, and having timeless designs that place the hair accessory at the centre of every outfit.
